BOTOX Q&A

What is Botox?

The 43 muscles in your face control expressions like smiling and frowning, and every time you make a facial expression your muscles contract. Over time, the elasticity of the skin decreases, paving the way for wrinkles and frown lines.

Botox is a drug containing a highly purified toxin from the bacteria Clostridium botulinum. When a small amount is injected into the muscle, it works by blocking nerves so that targeted muscles don’t respond. This results in relaxed muscles underneath the skin, which smooths out creases to decrease wrinkles.*

Botox injections are used to address frown lines between the eyebrows, forehead furrows, and crow’s feet at the corners of the eyes.

What is a Botox treatment session like?

Botox is a quick and effective procedure. While you’re comfortably reclined, your provider makes a series of injections to targeted areas of your face. You may feel a small pinch similar to a mosquito bite with each injection. If you’re particularly sensitive your provider can use a topical cream to numb the area prior to treatment. The treatment takes as little as 10 minutes, after which you can return to work and your regular daily activities.

When will I see results?

Many patients are amazed to see results in as little as 24-48 hours with BOTOX Cosmetic and in about three to four days with XEOMIN. Taking before and after photos is a helpful way to see the major difference Botox makes in your appearance.

You can expect the results of Botox to last anywhere from three to six months. The effect of Botox on your nerves wears off over the course of several months and the action of your muscles will return. When it does, lines and wrinkles gradually reappear and need to be treated again. Many patients find they can maintain smoother skin with two to four treatments a year.

Is Botox safe?

Botox is an extremely safe procedure for healthy adults when performed by a trained practitioner. You may experience mild, temporary discomfort and redness at the injection side. Your provider will discuss other possible side effects, which may depend on your health.

Women who are pregnant or nursing or people with certain neurological disorders shouldn’t get Botox.
